DESCRIPTION:
After receiving his early training in Utrecht, Jan Both spent the years 1638 to 1641 in Rome. There he came in contact with a group of painters called the bamboccianti, who painted lively peasant scenes and were mostly natives of the Low Countries. He was also exposed to the work of Claude Lorrain, whose idealized landscapes had an international clientele. Returning to the Netherlands, Both developed a landscape style that combined the divergent elements of his Roman experience. The resulting fusion of picturesque foreground details with panoramic vistas and a clear, golden light profoundly influenced later Dutch painters of Italian subjects.
