Pietà by Parodi
Date: 2008/Aug/21 Thu
Filippo Parodi
Italian, 1630-1702
Pietà, c. 1686
Terracotta
DESCRIPTION:
Filippo Parodi spent much of his long and productive career in his native Genoa, where he introduced the Baroque style in sculpture. A versatile artist, he carved both marble and wood, and during the 1680s and 1690s, he was a dominant presence in Venice and Padua. Among his Paduan commissions was the altar of the Pietà for the Benedictine abbey of Santa Giustina. The central figures of the marble Pietà are represented in this terracotta sculpture, which is unusually large and finished, indicating that it was conceived as a presentation model rather than a sketchier bozzetto.
