DESCRIPTION:
Samuel van Hoogstraten studied with Rembrandt in the early 1640s, when the great painter's public reputation was at its height. In his own career asa painter and writer on art, Hoogstraten sought acclaim as a learned artist. He worked for the imperial court in Vienna, moved to London following the restoration of the Stuart monarchy, and by 1668 settled in The Hague, the eat of the Dutch government, accommodating his style to his changing surroundings. In this late work, he catered to an aristocratic taste, subordinating the astonished soldiers to the idealized figure of Christ and the three courtly angels bathed in a cool, supernatural light.
