Look for small crossbars on long spines projecting from this edaphosaurid synapsid's backbone. Long spines with crossbars are unique to edaphosaurids, which are extinct today. Most edaphosaurids were probably planet eaters; the blunt teeth lining this specimen's jaws were suited for grinding down tough plants.
