People looking down into Mastaba Tomb

Date: 2008/Aug/21 Thu

Mastaba tombs like this one were built of limestone blocks.

The rooms are very narrow so that rectangles of limestone could safely be used as roofing material. Spaces between the exterior walls and the interior rooms were simply filled with dirt, sand, and building refuse. The 50 to 100 foot burial shaft was filled with this rubble as well to prevent robbers from entering it.
