What happened with NetNut?
On July 2, 2026, the FBI, Google, Lumen, Shadowserver Foundation, and others took joint action against the NetNut proxy network, a subsidiary of Israeli-based Alarum Technologies Ltd. This resulted in the seizure of company domains, related Google accounts and services, and the disabling of applications embedded with NetNut SDKs.
To date, the FBI and other law enforcement have provided little direct information on this matter, aside from the “this website has been seized” banner on NetNut.io.
A Google Threat Intelligence post, however, explains in detail the reason behind all that work. In a nutshell, they found that parts of the NetNut residential proxy IPs (~ 2 million devices, as estimated by Google) overlapped with the infamous Popa botnet, a hijacked consumer-device network known for routing malicious traffic.
